Test day tips

Practical strategies for the day of your ADI Part 1 test, covering how to prepare beforehand, stay calm during the exam, and respond to your result afterwards.

Key facts

  • You MUST arrive 15 minutes before your test — late means cancelled, and you lose your fee
  • You get your results immediately after completing the test

The day of the test can be nerve-wracking, but with the right strategies you can walk in with confidence and perform at your best.

Before the test

Get a good night's sleep. Rest is crucial. A well-rested mind is sharper and better at recalling information.

Arrive early — 15 minutes, and it is not optional. DVSA requires you to arrive 15 minutes before your test starts. This is not a suggestion for settling your nerves: if you're late for your test, it will be cancelled and you'll lose your money, and you will have to book and pay again. Plan for traffic, parking and finding the centre, and treat 15 minutes as the latest acceptable arrival rather than the target.

During the test

Stay calm. It's natural to feel nervous, but don't let anxiety take over. Take deep breaths and focus on the questions.

Read carefully. Take your time to read each question thoroughly. Misreading a question could lead to a wrong answer.

Review your answers. If you finish early, use the remaining time to review your answers and catch mistakes.

After the test

You'll get your results immediately after completing the test. If you pass, congratulations. You're one step closer to becoming an ADI.

If you don't pass, don't be discouraged. Use the feedback provided to identify areas needing improvement and focus on them before your retake.

You've got this. Stay focused and confident, and good luck on the day.
