Anticipation in the COAST method
Predict what other road users are likely to do before they do it, using five practical anticipation hints and a trainer feedback task.

Imagine you are watching a film, and you just know what is going to happen next. That is anticipation, except in driving it is about staying safe and in control.
Anticipation is your ability to predict what might happen on the road based on what you see and know.
In advanced driving, anticipation is key. The examiner in your ADI Part 2 exam will be watching to see if you can read the road like a professional, spot risks early and make smooth decisions.
Your anticipation hints
- Look far ahead and stay aware. The road is not just what is in front of you. Stay aware of everything happening around you.
- Read other road users. Learn to spot clues from pedestrians, cyclists and drivers before they act.
- Follow signs and markings. Road signs tell you what is ahead. Use them to prepare early.
- Weather awareness. Rain, fog and ice require extra planning and increased stopping distances.
- Play the what if game. Constantly ask yourself what could happen next and how you would respond safely.
Feedback task
Ask a trainer, mentor or trusted observer to review your driving and provide feedback on your anticipation. Discuss areas where you excelled and where improvement is needed.
